Four go "Further up the river"

Four friends rowed out and up
The river on that most happy day
Double sculling in Twinkle Toes
As is the old fashioned rowers way

Joost and Michael gave it their
Most impressive Hollanders all
While in the bow Clare kept
A look out
As from the stern Kevin helmed
And made to make
The very occasional “coxswains call”

Later at the café they had beer
And ice cream
Then talked much of the science
That is the foundation of the art
Of all rowing in between

The return journey was done
With precision and at great speed
With Clare stroking until it was
Decided by all present that, for
The edition “gates and buttons”
There was “a most definite need”

Far too many among us “chase a buck”
And spend too much time “in
Self indulgent materialistic ways”
When in fact rowing in the open air
In good company results in learning
Much more, that stays in the mind
To steady it, and pleasure it, always!

The world took, not one forward,
Or backward, motion from those
Happy peoples actions on that day
Nor was it harmed, or polluted as,
Once again their preferred method
Of transport was hauled from the water
So as to be purposefully put away

Supper cooked by Joost
Later was again “a cordial affair”
With talk of rowing once again
Most prevalent there

After all if you have rowed hard
With each other out upon the water course
There is much to be discussed
That is relevant, to the that evenings,
Most pleasurable dialog and discourse!
